Have You Ever Considered a Facelift?

Have you ever considered having a facelift? If you’ve looked in the mirror recently and noticed significant signs of aging, sun damage, or the stresses of daily life taking a toll on your face and neck, you may have asked yourself, what can I do to diminish these effects?

A rhytidectomy, more commonly known as a facelift, can rejuvenate the mid to low-er face and neck. If your face shows signs of aging, deep creases beginning to appear around your mouth or if your neck starts to develop folds and fat deposits, a facelift can significantly improve these aging signs. Many patients who elect to have a facelift also have signs of aging around the eyes which can be improved with an eyelid lift (Blepharoplasty).  A facelift and Blepharoplasty can be performed simultaneously. Keep reading to find out about a traditional facelift verses a limited incision facelift and call Suffolk Plastic Surgeons with any questions or to schedule a consultation!

Traditional Facelift

During a traditional facelift, the incision begins at the temples and travels downward toward the front of the ear, just around the earlobe and then behind the ear to the lower scalp where the hairline forms.

Limited Incision Facelift

If you’re looking for to rejuvenate around the jawline, this procedure can achieve that by making short incisions starting at the sideburn and extending along the front of the ear, ending at the earlobe. A limited incision facelift is indicated in an individual with moderate skin laxity.

Recovering from a facelift takes time. If you are considering a facelift procedure, you must be prepared for the possibility of swelling, numbness, bruising, and a feeling of tightness or tension in the face and neck. These signs of healing are all normal and will subside within 3-6 weeks. Someone who has a limited incision facelift can expect a shorter recovery time. It should be noted that if you’re considering a facelift, this procedure is not a permanent solution to the impacts of aging on the face. Instead, a facelift has the ability to rejuvenate the facial features for an extended period of time.

If you are wishing to improve your brow, eyelids or nose, a facelift will not achieve these things, but these are services that Suffolk Plastic Surgeons, P.C. would be happy to talk with you about. If you’re interested in enhancing your facial appearance and are unsure of what procedure is right for you, give us a call today to schedule a consultation.

Considering Liposuction? Here’s What you Need to Know.

Want to get rid of troubled areas of fat that you’ve struggled with for a long time? Maybe you have tried several alternatives but have struggled with excessive fatty areas that you just can’t get rid of. While it’s still cold and you’re bundled up now, you might be envisioning your dream bikini body. Now is the perfect time to discuss your options so you can feel your most confident this summer by the pool or beach!

Liposuction provides patients with peace of mind that their problem areas can be eliminated once and for all. With several techniques available for those seeking liposuction treatment, the procedure itself is performed routinely at Suffolk Plastic Surgeons, P.C. in our fully accredited, on site operating room.

As technology has improved, so has the way we perform liposuction. Today, we rely mainly on a tumescent technique but we also use laser energy to assist the process. When the laser-assisted tumescent liposuction procedure is performed, a laser is used to target an area of fat that is liquefied and then removed. Because some people opt to have liposuction per-formed to treat excess or sagging skin, the laser can also be used to tighten areas of skin after the liposuction treatment has been performed.

While liposuction is an outpatient procedure, patients still experience swelling, bruising and discomfort in the treated area(s). Patients typically return to normal activities within a few days, while more strenuous activity such as working out, should be put off for a few weeks while the body has time to heal completely.

Winter is the perfect time to have liposuction, as you’re inside more and have time to properly heal. You can achieve the beach body you’ve always wanted in time for Summer. If you’re considering liposuction and want to talk about the procedure in more detail, give Suffolk Plastic Surgeons, P.C. a call today to schedule a consultation!

Why Now is the Best Time to Get a Chemical Peel

With February here, we are in the midst of the coldest months of the year. It might be comforting to know that the first day of spring is really only a little more than a month away, but that doesn’t mean our skin should be neglected until the warmer months roll around. In fact, it is best to continuously rejuvenate and be mindful of your skin during Winter, so that you are in better shape in anticipation for summer.

A chemical peel is a great way to rejuvenate your skin or take care of underlying skin issues you have suffered from for many years. By removing the damaged outer layers of skin, a peel can smooth the texture, reduce scarring, and remove blemishes to produce healthy, glowing skin.

If you are interested in a chemical peel, you should first figure out which peel is right for you, as there are three different types, ranging from mild to strong.

Alphahydroxy Acids (AHAs)

AHAs are the mildest version of chemical peels. AHA peels consist of glycolic, lactic and fruit acids that work to not only make the surface of your facial skin smooth, but also brighter. AHA’s are usually applied once a week, with a total treatment time of 10 minutes or less.

Trichloroacetic Acid (TCA)

TCAs are used for medium-depth peeling and are recommended if you are looking to treat wrinkles, superficial blemishes and pigment problems. In some patient cases, two chemical peels can be mixed together. An added bonus of TCAs is that this type of peel can be used on the neck and benefits those with a darker complexion. The TCA treatment takes between 10 and 15 minutes total.

Phenol is the strongest of the three chemical peels. Because it is the harshest on the skin, it is used to treat coarse facial wrinkles, pre-cancerous growths, and areas of blotchy or damaged skin caused by sun exposure, aging or birth control pills. Unlike TCAs, phenol can only be used on the face and has the ability to lighten skin wherever it is applied, so the patients skin tone is a factor.

When you schedule a consultation with Suffolk Plastic Surgeons, P.C we will determine which chemical peel is appropriate for your skin needs. If you are interested in discussing your options further in regards to a chemical peel, give us a call today!

Why Now is the Best Time for a Mommy Makeover

Becoming a parent is one of the most rewarding experiences a woman can have. There’s good reason to feel excited and proud of the changes motherhood brings to your body. However, over time, some of those changes can begin to seem more like a burden. Enter the Mommy Makeover! It can be a powerful confidence-booster that gives you just the lift you need this holiday season.

What Exactly is a Mommy Makeover?

A mommy makeover is a combination of plastic surgery solutions designed to reverse or alleviate the effects of pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding. You and your doctor will consult to decide on exactly which treatments you’d like to have, but most plans include a combination of CoolSculpting® or liposuction, breast lift, and tummy tuck. Of course, you can always choose to skip or add elements to personalize your own Mommy Makeover.

What Can a Mommy Makeover Fix?

It’s important to be realistic in your goals for a Mommy Makeover. No matter how good your plastic surgeon, you aren’t going to come out looking exactly the way you did before you had children – and no one can truly turn back time. However, the techniques used can make you look and feel more like you used to about your body – and in some cases, even better.

Why is Winter the Best Time for a Mommy Makeover?

There are a number of reasons why winter is considered by many to be the best time to schedule a Mommy Makeover:

  1. 1. Downtime. The shorter, darker, colder days of winter may actually make it easier to handle the need to stay at home and be less active after your procedures.
  2. 2. Cool Weather. Staying cool is actually important to the healing process. In winter, you don’t have to worry about becoming overheated from the necessary bandages and compresses.
  3. 3. Wardrobe. A winter wardrobe makes it easier to hide your healing and the fact that you had any procedures done until you’re fully recovered – and ready to show your new body off.
  4. 4. Less Risk from Sun. Any time you undergo a plastic surgery procedure, keeping the healing skin protected from sun exposure is essential. In the winter, it’s much easier to avoid exposing your surgery sites to ultraviolet rays.
  5. 5. School. With the kids in school, it’s easier to take the time you need for yourself as you recover physically and rebuild your new and enhanced self-esteem.
  6. 6. Time Off. The holidays usually offer a built-in set of days off – and it’s often easier to explain away the extra time off from work that you may need.
  7. 7. No Missing Out. Plan your makeover in winter, and you’ll be ready to go in spring – with no need to bow out of fun outdoor activities. And just wait for swimsuit season!

Why Ultherapy May Be Better Than Lasers

Everyone wants to look and feel their best. Unfortunately, as many of us grow older, we find that as a normal part of the aging process our skin slowly loses its elasticity. Wanting to tighten and tone and improve the texture of that skin has led many people to try chemical peels and laser treatments as nonsurgical ways to look more youthful. Now, there’s a newer – and perhaps better – option available: Ultherapy®.

First approved by the FDA in 2009, Ultherapy uses focused ultrasound waves on the face, neck, chin and décolletage (chest area). It targets the underlying, foundational layers of skin instead of merely surface layers, reaching 3 mm to 4.5 mm beneath the surface – as far as the muscles – to trigger the natural production of new collagen while tightening and lifting. This can provide significant results without any of the downtime for recovery associated with a traditional facelift or chemical peel.

The process usually involves one treatment per focus area, and results are long-lasting and natural-looking. The procedure lasts from thirty to ninety minutes, depending on the area being treated. Most patients describe the experience as merely uncomfortable, resembling multiple, tiny bee stings. Additional benefits of Ultherapy include the fact that most people can return to their normal routine the same day, and there is no need for any needles or exposure to toxins.

There is also no unsightly swelling or bruising after an Ultherapy session, and the changes appear gradually, so that it is not as likely that people will notice a significant change and think you had “some work done.” Instead, you slowly begin to look younger, with tighter, more resilient skin. Full results may take up to six months to appear, but they last for approximately two years. While the change may not be as dramatic as a face-lift, most patients are thrilled with the results.

Laser Treatments

Lasers, on the other hand, rely on light energy instead of sound and focus on the skin’s surface. Fractional skin resurfacing also triggers the production of collagen, but it is more useful for addressing surface issues, such as acne scars, blemishes, fine lines, age spots, hyperpigmentation, and sun damage.

Lasers also usually require multiple sessions, and there are frequently treatment side-effects, including swelling, redness, darkening of spots, and peeling. Recovery from laser skin resurfacing can take up to two weeks, and it may take months for the full results to appear. Smoking and some medications can prolong your healing time, so it’s important to be open and honest with your doctor about your habits. You may also need a prescription for an antibiotic and/or antiviral medication, depending on your medical history.

As always, the best way to decide which cosmetic treatment option is best for you is to discuss your particular case, including concerns and desired results, with an expert. The physicians at Suffolk Plastic Surgeons specialize in Ultherapy and are happy to consult with you on the best option for your skin.

What’s the Difference Between Coolsculpting and Liposuction

Looking to shed a few stubborn pounds? Liposuction has long been the preferred treatment for permanently removing unwanted fat deposits. And now, with the introduction of CoolSculpting®, clients have a choice. The question is, which procedure is right for you? Let’s take a look at exactly what each procedure involves, including its pros and cons.

Believe it or not, liposuction, also known as lipoplasty or suction lipectomy, has been around since the 1920s, when it was first introduced in France. It finally gained popularity during the 1980s, after a suction-assisted method of removing fat was introduced, and quickly became a common cosmetic treatment. Newer technology has evolved over the years to provide greater accuracy with shorter recovery times. Today, most liposuction techniques involve a minimally-invasive surgical procedure using a small, thin tube, or cannula, inserted into tiny incisions. It is currently the most popular cosmetic procedure performed in the United States.

  • Effective for small, targeted areas
  • Works on small pockets of stubborn fat
  • Offers immediate results
  • Limited amount of pain during recovery
  • Works well for those in good health
  • Outpatient process
  • General anesthesia is not required
  • No stitches necessary
  • Can usually return to work within a few days
  • Results can be permanent

  • Not an effective technique for major weight loss
  • Is not recommended for those with serious health issues
  • Exercise and strenuous activity must be avoided for a few weeks
  • Weight gain after the procedure may alter results
  • May result in minor, local scarring

CoolSculpting, or cryolipolysis, was first approved by the FDA in 2010 for use in destroying subcutaneous fat. Sections of skin and underlying fat in target areas are pulled up into a device where they are cooled enough to damage the fat cells without harming the surrounding skin and connective tissue. The treated fat cells then crystallize, die, and are safely absorbed by your body over time.

  • Effective for small, targeted areas
  • Works on small pockets of stubborn fat as well as generalized areas
  • Few side effects that resolve completely within a few weeks
  • Works well for all patients
  • No scarring
  • Outpatient process
  • No anesthesia is necessary
  • No needles or cuts to the skin required
  • Can usually return to work immediately
  • No need to avoid exercise or strenuous activity

  • Not an effective technique for major weight loss
  • Weight gain after the procedure may alter results
  • May require more than one treatment
  • Results will not appear for a few weeks
  • May cause temporary bruising, swelling or numbness
  • Long-term results unknown

Blanca’s House 5th Annual Thanksgiving

On Thanksgiving night, Blanca’s House held their 5th annual Thanksgiving Feast in Bay Shore. Blanca’s House is an organization that brings much needed quality medical care to countries and communities throughout Latin America. The services specifically benefit people who otherwise would have limited or no access to a doctor. Each year, over 200 medical and non-medical personnel travel to countries throughout Latin America to provide free healthcare services.

In addition to their healthcare services, Blanca’s House hosts events to bring people together, so on November 24th, the community was excited to come together for a Thanksgiving meal! Dr. Kneessy and his wife, Lori who acts as the Outreach Coordinator of Blanca’s House, attended as co-chairs of the dinner. Dr. Kneessy and the Nyholm family provided the food for the feast, in addition to partnering with Roger from Ragazzi Restaurant to put the finishing touches on the dinner.

Dr. Coccaro also attended the event, as he is a Co-Chairman of Blanca’s House. Along with Dr. Coccaro was his son and nephew who helped to distribute nonperishable food items to the dinner guests, courtesy of the Cusano Family, the St. Anthony’s Baseball team and Hofstra Club baseball. The co-chairs of the event and those involved in the organization also distributed winter coats to participants.

Overall the event was a great success, and helped to illustrate the real meaning of Thanksgiving – giving abundance to those in need!

The Most Common Male Procedures

In the United States, the number of men who undergo procedures to improve their overall appearance has increased by nearly 325% over the last 19 years. Cosmetic procedures for men are becoming more and more popular by the year. According to The American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the top five surgical and nonsurgical procedures for men are gynecomastia surgery, eyelid rejuvenation surgery, rhinoplasty, liposuction, and Ultherapy neck-lifts. Keep reading to find out more about these and other popular plastic surgery procedures for men.

Surgical Cosmetic Treatments

Gynecomastia is the disorder of the overdevelopment of male breasts. This disorder impacts nearly 70 percent of boys during puberty and a large percentage of men. Though the condition is quite normal, it can cause a significant lack of body confidence. A gynecomastia surgery procedure reduces a man’s breast size significantly by getting rid of excess fat or stretched skin.

Eyelid Rejuvenation

Over time, our eyelids can droop or sag, usually due to age or significant sun damage. Because the skin around our eyelids is thin and sensitive, aging or damage to the area shows fairly quickly. Eyelid rejuvenation surgery is a great way to reverse these effects and maintain the area for an extended period of time. Tightening the upper and lower eyelids or removing excess fat around the area can repair the skin around the eyelid, making the overall appearance of the face younger.

Rhinoplasty, or nasal surgery, is a very common procedure today. This procedure is more invasive than the above-mentioned processes. During a rhinoplasty, the nose can be reshaped or realigned to create the patients desired angle. Some people opt to undergo a rhinoplasty because they have suffered an injury to the face or nose region in the past and want to correct the damage, or because of breathing and sinus issues.

Liposuction is the most common procedure to remove specific areas of fat from the body. During this procedure, a tube is used to remove fat deposits. The process of conducting a liposuction treatment has changed drastically over the last two decades. Today, laser technology and ultrasound imaging are used to complete liposuction procedures.

Nonsurgical Treatment Options

Neck Lifts

Ultherapy is a great nonsurgical treatment that can improve the overall appearance of your neck without drastic or more invasive methods. By tightening the tissues within the neck and face regions, sagging or stretched skin can be rejuvenated to give a more youthful appearance to your skin. Ultherapy uses an applicator that delivers low-level focused heat to a specific portion of the neck or face, signaling for new collagen to be produced.

Coolsculpting is the first and only nonsurgical treatment that can effectively reduce fat layers and problem areas. This procedure uses cooling technology to select and eliminate fat. The most common problem areas that are treated by Coolsculpting are muffin tops, love handles ad back fat.

Soft tissue fillers are a great way to restore volume and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles throughout the face. For men, Botox is most commonly used between the eyebrows and across the forehead. These injectable fillers typically last for up to six months and the procedure itself is quick and causes little to no discomfort.

At Suffolk Plastic Surgeons, your body confidence is our number one priority. We offer all of the above procedures and would be happy to discuss the options available to you during a consultation. Please give us a call today!

What is Microdermabrasion?

Every day, your skin is exposed to the environment and the elements. Over the year, the sun’s rays, pollution, and other damaging agents will inevitably take their toll. Microdermabrasion resolves this issue by removing the damaged layer to reveal younger, healthier looking skin.

How Does It Work?

Microdermabrasion is a non-chemical, non-invasive procedure that uses a fine spray of microcrystals to abrade the outer layer of dry, dead skin cells. This procedure is much more gentle than dermabrasion, which is used to treat deep facial lines, scars, and sun damage.

What Can Microdermabrasion Fix?

Microdermabrasion has many uses. It improves the appearance of the skin not only by removing the outermost layer, but by encouraging the production of a new underlying layer of skin cells with a higher level of collagen and elastin (the proteins that make your skin appear taut and smooth). The procedure can also help eliminate:

  • Wrinkles and lines
  • Crow’s feet
  • Age spots
  • Light acne scars and blackheads
  • Undesired hyperpigmentation (patches of darkened skin)
  • Stretch marks
  • Enlarged pores

Am I a Good Candidate for Microdermabrasion?

Ideal candidates for microdermabrasion are healthy adults with relatively minor skin conditions or imperfections. It is also important that prospective patients understand that this mild, non-invasive procedure cannot correct deep facial creases and folds, significant scarring, or significant sun damage. Such issues can, however, be addressed with other procedures.

Patients experiencing legions, Stage 3 or 4 acne, unstable diabetes, or pregnancy should not pursue microdermabrasion.

Is Microdermabrasion Painful?

No. Microdermabrasion is a gentle procedure which uses tiny crystals to exfoliate the skin. Most patients describe the treatment as having a “warming” or “tingling effect”, or liken it to having a massage.
